about

The latest offering from Toronto studio stalwarts Bart, "Into", is a classic pop number whose sunny opening melody belies its message of condemnation for those who choose a life of compromise in the face of capitalism. Amid a flurry of fuzzed lead guitar the damnation feels particularly pointed in the tune’s second half as the vocals chant “Give up you soul and then it goes away. Only the ghosts of good things gone know of your disgrace”.

Christopher Shannon explains the song’s inspiration:

"Into' is about people making decisions in every facet of life based on capital gain, and how poisonous that is to both the individual and larger communities. When we change who we are for money, and 'love' who we 'love' for financial security, our entire experience is tainted by exploitation. Selling out your life and feeling like it's a fair trade is a natural consequence of late-stage capitalism, and it breaks my heart."

lyrics

When you step into the fire
Do you think that you can tell?
Turn it over on itself

Feel the fever in your mind
Ask the good lord for His best
As you get into this mess

You get a new job, get a new life
Hope that your dreams are sugar and spice
While you say its not for profit

You get a new car, get a new wife
Hope that she tells you you have arrived
At the best of what is offered

But you're thinking of the profit

Give up your soul and then it goes away
Only the ghosts of good things gone
know of your disgrace
