about

Just under a year after the release of the critically acclaimed Today, Tomorrow, & The Next Day, Bart return with their new single Used To Be. An acoustic and wurlitzer led reflection on relationships, Used To Be features a co-write and vocals by Dan Edmonds as well as the unmistakable sound of constant Bart collaborator Joseph Shabason’s saxophone.

Distilling the band’s sophisticated, classic song craft into a succinct pop gem, Used To Be recalls melodic giants such as Big Star and Emitt Rhodes. Dan explains the single’s melancholic tone in this light: “The song speaks to a shift within friendship, specifically, when you begin to see someone that is dear to you in a disheartening light. It's also about having acceptance, when unfortunate truths become revealed.”

With their increased visibility as producers for others and permanent studio residence, the notoriously long waits for new material seem to be a thing of the past as we are very happy to announce that Used To Be, with it’s universal truths, burrowing hooks and rolling toms is but the first salvo in a planned series of singles from Bart.

lyrics

You used to be a brother
you used to need the truth
but when you found your answers
you didn't need the proof

When you say it
does it make you feel like its sacred
like you made it real?

History repeats itself
and now you're on your own
The closer that we get to one another
you know you want to be alone
do you now?

Spare me all consideration
losing sight of what you seek
no loose threads to sell or lend you
but stay a while
stay a week

Hard to convince you
with one hand on the street
it's within you
outsource sympathy

History repeats itself
and now you're on your own
the closer that we get to one another
you know you want to be alone
do you now?
